    The Quick Answer

Zara uses European sizing based on Spanish manufacturing standards. A Zara Medium is cut to fit the same measurements as a Small in most US or UK brands. If you normally wear a Medium, buy a Large at Zara. If you are between sizes, always go up, never down.

The TL;DR: Size up 1–2 sizes across almost every category.

    Why Zara Runs Small

Zara is headquartered in Arteixo, Spain, and its size templates are rooted in European body standards, specifically the Spanish sizing system, which runs roughly one full size smaller than the US and the UK. Unlike American brands that have adopted "vanity sizing" (making clothes larger over time), Zara has largely kept its original European cut.

    There are three compounding factors:

    Narrow Shoulder Cuts

Zara tops are cut with a narrow shoulder seam, which can feel constricting even when the chest measurement technically fits. If you have broad shoulders, this alone often forces you up a size.

    Slim Leg Tapers

Zara bottoms, particularly their straight-leg and slim-fit trousers, taper aggressively through the thigh. The waist might button up, but the thigh fit can be uncomfortably tight.

    Short Torso Lengths

Their tops and dresses are cut for a shorter torso. If you are 5 foot 7 or taller, a Zara dress that looks midi-length on the model will likely sit well above the knee on you.

    Category Breakdown

    Tops (Size Up 1)

Zara tops run narrow in the shoulders and tight across the chest. If you are between sizes, sizing up is non-negotiable. The exception is their oversized collection, which is intentionally generous.

    Bottoms (Size Up 1)

European tailoring runs slim through the thigh. The waistband is often fine, but the leg opening and thigh width are where people get caught out. If you carry weight in your hips or thighs, size up without hesitation.

    Dresses (Size Up 1–2)

Dresses are the worst category for sizing. They combine the narrow top and short torso problems. Additionally, many Zara dresses are designed to be worn without bras, meaning the built-in support is cut for a very narrow back.

    Outerwear (Size Up 1)

Zara coats and jackets are cut slim. If you want to layer a sweater underneath, which is the point of outerwear, you will almost certainly need to size up.

The 3 Rules for Shopping Zara

Rule 1: Always check the centimeter measurements. Zara publishes exact garment measurements on every product page. Use these — not the size label.

Rule 2: When in doubt, size up. Zara has a generous return policy, but a slightly large item is easier to have tailored than a too-small one is to return after wearing.

Rule 3: Read the fabric composition. Items with 2% or more elastane have significant stretch and are more forgiving. 100% cotton or 100% polyester items have zero give — size up without hesitation on those.

    The Bottom Line

Zara runs 1–2 European sizes small. The rule is simple: if you normally wear a Medium anywhere else, buy a Large at Zara. If you are between sizes, always go up. Use the centimeter measurements on the product page as your final authority, not the size tag.
